Giovanni Rosso Langhe Nebbiolo 2021 is produced by Davide Rosso at the family estate in Serralunga d'Alba, one of the eleven villages of the Barolo appellation and long regarded as its most structurally imposing commune — a place where the Helvetian clay-limestone soils known as Tortonian produce Nebbiolo of singular density and longevity. The Rosso family has farmed vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba since the 1890s, with Davide — the third generation — taking charge of vinification in 2001 at twenty-seven following studies in oenology and formative experience in France. The estate holds significant parcels in some of Serralunga's most celebrated crus, including a substantial ownership of the legendary amphitheater vineyard Vigna Rionda. The guiding principle Davide brought back from his formative years remains unchanged: wine should be a perfect copy of its terroir. The Langhe Nebbiolo draws from younger vines and declassified fruit across the estate's Serralunga holdings, representing the most accessible expression of the same Nebbiolo philosophy that shapes the estate's Barolo at a fraction of the price.

The 2021 vintage delivered exceptional conditions across Piedmont — a growing season of cool temperatures and steady rainfall that preserved natural acidity and produced Nebbiolo of remarkable aromatic precision and structural balance. The wine is produced with traditional methods consistent with Giovanni Rosso's approach throughout the range: indigenous yeast fermentation, careful extraction to preserve the variety's characteristic tannin structure without hardening it, and aging in large traditional Slavonian oak casks that allow the wine to develop without the intrusion of new wood character. The Langhe DOC designation allows the Nebbiolo to be released earlier than Barolo regulations permit, making it approachable within a year or two of harvest while carrying the genuine structural depth of the Serralunga terroir beneath its surface.

The nose is fragrant and vibrant — red raspberry, wild cherry, and rose petal opening into blue flower, aniseed, and blood orange, with a thread of tilled earth and spice underneath that the 2021 vintage's precision makes unusually expressive for a wine at this level. The palate is tense and savory, with wild cherry, star anise, and a hint of orange zest alongside lithe, well-defined tannins and a vivid acidity that is the hallmark of Nebbiolo grown in Serralunga's compressed, mineral-rich soils. The finish is dry and firm, closing on dried herb, a light tarry earth note, and the characteristic rustic persistence that distinguishes great Langhe Nebbiolo from wines that merely carry the name.

Amelia ★★★★★

I cracked this open last night and was immediately impressed by how the tannins are already integrating so well for a young Nebbiolo. The structure from Serralunga really shines through, giving it a lot of depth without being too heavy. This is one of those bottles that makes you want to buy a case

Henry ★★★★★

The nose on this one is pure Serralunga—that stony, lifted tar note you don't get from other villages. It’s still tight on day one, but after an hour in the glass it softened into something really elegant. Glad I bought two.

Emily N. ★★★★★

Poured a glass last night and the structure really shines through—it's got that classic Serralunga grip but stays elegant. The tannins are fine and integrated, not harsh at all. Perfect with a simple pasta.
