Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2018 is the prestige cuvée of Maison Veuve Clicquot in Reims, produced only in years that Chef de Cave Didier Mariotti judges to have delivered the conditions necessary for a wine of lasting significance — a standard that has resulted in just 25 vintages since the cuvée was first launched in 1972 to celebrate the Maison's bicentenary. The name honors Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin — Madame Clicquot — who assumed control of her husband's Champagne house at twenty-seven following his death in 1805 and built it into one of the most celebrated wine estates in the world, introducing the first known vintage Champagne in 1810, inventing the riddling table in 1816, and creating the first known blended rosé Champagne by assemblage in 1818. Each innovation she introduced remains foundational to the méthode traditionnelle as practiced globally today. Her conviction that "our black grapes give the finest white wines" is honored directly in the composition of La Grande Dame, which has been assembled from approximately 90% Pinot Noir since the 2008 vintage — one of the highest proportions of any prestige cuvée in the appellation.

The 2018 growing season delivered exceptional conditions across Champagne — long, sunny days, generous heat accumulation, and a harvest of fully ripe grapes that Mariotti described as offering "a maturity of grapes close to perfection." The blend draws from eight of the Maison's historic Grand Cru villages, with the Pinot Noir sourced from the Montagne de Reims — Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, and Verzenay among them — providing the structural power and dark fruit intensity that Madame Clicquot prized, while the 10% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs contributes the mineral precision and citrus-driven acidity that gives the wine its lift and longevity. The wine was disgorged in September 2024 following extended lees aging in the Maison's historic chalk crayères beneath Reims.

The nose is luminous and generous, opening with lemon oil, verbena, orange rind, and grapefruit alongside a deeply mineral and tightly wound core that the 2018 vintage's warmth frames rather than obscures. Candied orange rind, yuzu, and a whisper of coconut cream develop with time in the glass, revealing the complexity that the Grand Cru Pinot Noir sources and the extended lees contact have built beneath the vintage's immediately appealing surface. The palate is finely detailed and energetic, with pinprick-sized bubbles and a lightly mouthwatering acidity framing patisserie pear, cherry fruit, pickled ginger, almond biscotti, and spun honey in a harmonious, sustained arc. The finish is long and mineral, closing with a dry chalk precision that anchors the wine's generosity and points toward a drinking window that extends well into the 2040s.

Charlotte ★★★★★

Bought this for my dad's 70th and the bubbles were so fine they almost felt creamy. The 2018 vintage is clearly something special — toasty and rich without being heavy. Worth every penny for a milestone like that.

Harper ★★★★★

Served this at my sister's engagement dinner and the bubbles were remarkably fine and persistent — still going strong after twenty minutes in the glass. The 2018 vintage is clearly a step up from the standard bottlings I've had, with a toasty edge that made it worth the splurge.

Benjamin ★★★★★

Opened this for my parents' 40th anniversary and the bubbles were so fine and persistent they lasted through the whole toast. You can really taste why 2018 was declared a vintage year — toasty brioche up front, then a clean citrus finish that isn't overly sweet. Worth the splurge for a milestone.
